Demand
One of the industry's key roles is to ensure at all times, supply meets demand in the most cost-effective way. Apart from isolated, large-scale industrial facilities, New Zealand's major demand locations (often known as load centers) are in the North Island, particularly Auckland. Demand is mainly influenced by seasonal factors. Extremes of temperature contribute to higher demand as heating and air conditioning units consume more power. Demand growth in New Zealand generally follows gross domestic product growth patterns. However, the small population and industrial base mean major facilities can significantly influence overall demand.

The graph below charts New Zealand's average daily demand. This graph is updated weekly, on Wednesday.
